Calling all longboard windsurfers to another longboard event.
Those around long enough may recall there used to be huge longboard regattas on the lakes in the midlands. Indeed at one stage Mullingar Sailing Club considered banning windsurfers because they were taking over (not sure how true this is :D)!
Well those days are long gone, as is any animosity.
Mullingar Sailing Club have kindly agreed to host a day of longboard racing on Lough Owel on 03/09/16.
For those of you not familiar with the venue. It's a spring lake that is the town water supply; it used to be so clean that I would stick my head into the water for a drink when I was windsurfing there regularly 20 years ago.
Yes the wind can be a bit variable for using shortboards (despite this I sailed it regularly on my Tiga 260 - and swam alot!); but perfect for longboard sailing.
It is one hour from Dublin, just off the M4.
I would call on all longboard windsurfers to get behind this and see if we can grow the longboard scene in Ireland. It remains huge in England, but was all but dead in Ireland until the Kona Fleet started, then the Round Cobh and Cong-Galway races took off again.
As for all general windsurfers that haven't been on longboards for many years. I was a dedicated high wind speedsailor for many years - but spent little time on the water - I now sail every week and have great fun doing so - there's a lot to be said for it.
