Spring Break - Belmullet, Mayo - May’24

A short review on the Spring Break trip to Belmullet 2024 by organiser, Malcolm Scott.

“We had a super fun weekend in Belmullet from Friday to Sunday . Over the weekend we had 18 people having 5 session in 3 days,  there  was something for everyone . We had both Starboard  and port tack delivering  side on , side and side off . We had waves from mast high Elly bay to fun head high at Faulmore.

Our first session was at Elly on Friday afternoon with south side shore winds and big chunky mast high waves in the sets . It quickly went side on  so we packed up and moved to Cross beach for some fun side shore jumping and wave riding on well over head high waves. Most people were out on 3.7 to 4.2 sails.

Saturday was an early start to catch  the south west wind delivering side to side off condition at Cross beach . About 10 of us were there for 7am and sailed for a few hours until it went west. We then rested and refuelled  and moved to the end of the peninsula  to Faulmore . The wind there was west producing side shore starboard tack conditions. The waves were a bit temperamental ranging from ok to good at times .Some of us were more lucky than others depending on when they happened to be out but everyone had lots of fun in the sun.

Sunday and it was back up to Cross beach  for more port tack side shore wave riding and jumping . Most people were on 4.7 or 4.2 with over head high waves again.

Over the weekend sails ranged from 3.5 to 4.7 It was great to see everyone going for it . I had planned lots of challenges and site set up with flags tents etc but that didn’t happen because the windsurfing got in the way (which I suppose is a good thing) . The 5 session over 3 days in 3 different location knocked my plan out the window . That said It was great to see the big 5 achieved as a group  (we will count attempts ) lots of forwards but Scotty stalled forward  over my mast takes the biscuit.  Phil’s pushies attempts were great , Cathal and Tom both did solid back loop attempts , John did the double ,a forward and backie on the one run . Pav is a wave riding machine while  Amy is now the  down the line queen. Daniel was the master of Faulmore  with some super top turns and a Guscrew. Ian takes the tile of most hours on the water and Scotty the most sail changes over the weekend .Billy fell in love (with his new board)  and  Rob C got the speed record for fastest down the line run . Rob M  most excited and enthusiastic.  Julius landed his first Gouiter  and Dan k the most suicidal pushy to face plant ever . Kevin and Lucas most committed having to bring the kids  with them to the beach .  Ross wins best excuse , telling  his wife he had to collect a car parts in Ballina. These  boys would stop at nothing to get a great session in .

A special mention to  Eugene the most generous for giving his time and some fantastic photos .

I think I would be take the prize for the person who swam the most . I was working on trying to hit the lip late and as hard as possible but often got it wrong and paid the price . That  was the same for most of us as everyone was going for it and paying the price as per the plan for the weekend.

So a big thanks to all who came . A fantastic bunch of peolpe to spend a weekend with . All the best Malcolm
